Gathering Global Wisdom to Compose a New Chapter in Language Education
10+ countries, 200+ experts, scholars, and language teachers, 4 specialized workshops, 6 plenary forums, and 42 parallel sessions.
🌟 In July 2025, in the Spring City of Kunming, we used language as a bridge to create a cross-border educational dialogue!
🌍 From July 18 to 20, 2025, the 1st International World Language Education Conference—jointly hosted by the North American Culture and Education Academy (NACEA) and Yunnan Minzu University, and co-organized by world-renowned institutions including the Yale University Center for Language Study, MIT Global Languages, and the University of Siena—was grandly held and successfully concluded in Kunming, Yunnan, China!
💡 This was not only an academic grand event but also an educational feast transcending cultures, languages, and geographies.
✨ Now, let us look back at those wonderful moments of intellectual collision, warm companionship, and profound inspiration!
I. Opening and Closing Ceremonies: A Star-Studded Beginning to a New Chapter in Education
On the morning of July 18, the International Conference Hall of Yunnan Minzu University was brilliantly illuminated, hosting a distinguished gathering of guests. Accompanied by the melodious traditional ethnic music performed by a local Yunnan ensemble, the conference officially commenced.
🌟 Ms. Lisa Huang Healy, Executive Director of the North American Culture and Education Academy (NACEA) and Conference Co-Chair (International); Zhong Yinghua, President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching; and Shao Weiqing, Vice President of Yunnan Minzu University, joined by several heavyweight guests, together lit up the launch ceremony to a thunderous standing ovation!
🌍 In her opening remarks, Ms. Lisa Huang Healy, Executive Director of NACEA, noted: "Language is the bridge connecting the world, and the bond for cultural exchange and mutual understanding."
🙌 Professor Per Urlaub, Director of MIT Global Languages, delivered a video address: "Language is the key to intercultural understanding; we must collectively respond to the dual challenges brought by technological transformation and global governance."
🌟 Bai Jianhua, Professor of Kenyon College, USA, delivered opening congratulations.
Dr. Bai Jianhua, tenured professor at Kenyon College, fully affirmed the core value of language education in promoting intercultural understanding and people-to-people exchange. He expressed high praise and support for the conference's role in fostering global innovation in language teaching.
🎤 On the morning of July 20,Wang Qiliang,President of Yunnan Minzu University, who also served as the Conference Co-Chair (China), emphasized in his closing speech: "Under the guidance of the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, language education not only carries the mission of cultural inheritance but should also become a vital source for promoting mutual learning and innovation among civilizations."
💡 Liu Jun, President of the City University of Macau, in a special address, paid tribute to language teachers worldwide: "You are the guardians of civilization and the igniters of the future—my salute to every language educator." He profoundly elaborated on the significant mission of language education in promoting civilizational dialogue. He emphasized that language is not just a tool for communication, but a bridge for mutual learning, calling on global educators to jointly shoulder the responsibility for cultural inheritance and innovation.

The six plenary forums of this conference covered multiple dimensions, including international Chinese language education, English and multilingual pedagogy, teacher development, student experience, technology integration, and mutual cultural learning. It brought together top scholars, frontline teachers, and student representatives from China, the U.S., and numerous other countries. The forums not only showcased rich academic achievements and pedagogical practices but also highlighted the characteristics of cross-cultural, cross-linguistic, and interdisciplinary dialogue. This reflects the profound value of language education as a "bridge connecting people and the world," providing a multidimensional space for exchange and reflection for all participants.

🔹Forum I: Development, Challenges, and Strategies in International Chinese Language Education
This forum, moderated by Lisa Huang Healy (Executive Director, NACEA), brought together authoritative experts from China and the U.S. to engage in a deep dialogue regarding the current status and future of international Chinese education.
Panelists from China included: Zhong Yinghua (President, ISCLT; Dean, International Institute of Chinese Language Education, Tianjin Normal University); Feng Liping (Dean and Professor, School of Chinese as a Second Language, Beijing Normal University); Ding Anqi (Dean and Professor, International College of Chinese Studies, East China Normal University); Cao Xianwen (Professor and Associate Dean, Institute for International Students, Nanjing University); Liu Bo (Associate Professor and Executive Director of the International Communication Center, Southwest Jiaotong University);
U.S. Representatives included: Shi Zhongqi (President, Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA; Senior Lecturer, Columbia University); Wang Jing (Director of the Chinese Program, East Asian Studies, Princeton University); Stacy Lyon (Director, Utah Chinese Dual Language Immersion); Maggie Chen (California Teacher of the Year; Director of Curriculum and Instruction,AAICE); Guan Chunmei (Indiana Teacher of the Year; Board Member, Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA).
The speakers engaged in high-level, multi-perspective exchanges on the opportunities, challenges, and innovative paths of Chinese education in a global context, providing thought-provoking insights and recommendations for all attendees.


🔹Forum II: Trends in Global English Language Education
Eric Grunwald (Director of the English Language Studies Program, MIT), joined by Professor Fernando Rubio (Director, Center for Language Study, Yale University), Professor Mary Jo Lubrano (Associate Director, Center for Language Study, Yale University), Associate Professor Abu Bakar Mohamed Razali (Universiti Putra Malaysia), and Farzana (Director of the Institute of Modern Languages, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh), along with other internationally renowned scholars, collectively explored new methodologies and assessment systems for English teaching in the era of Artificial Intelligence. The forum focused on the integration of technology and the future of language pedagogy, presenting a cross-cultural and cross-regional vision for innovation in English education.

🔹Forum III: A Tribute to Global Language Teachers and Students
Moderated by Professor Tan Dali (President, NACEA), distinguished guests including Li Kai, Wu Yinghui, Da Jun, and Wu Sihui shared their insights and practices regarding identity and growth trajectories in the process of multilingual teaching and learning. This forum not only paid tribute to the dedication of language educators and students but also explored in depth how language shapes individual and collective identities within multicultural contexts.

🔹Forum IV: Student Interviews — Intercultural Learning and Identity Construction
Moderated by Chen Tong (Vice President of NACEA and Lecturer at MIT), this forum featured non-native learners of Chinese and English, including Afrasiab Mian (USA), Joshua Charles Woodard (USA), Andrew Fower (USA), and Qianzhi Lv (China). Together, they shared how Chinese language learning has reshaped their professional careers and cultural perceptions. These authentic and moving intercultural narratives demonstrated the profound power of language as a medium for identity construction.

🔹Forum V: Teacher Interviews — Sustainable Growth for Language Educators
Moderated by Meiru Liu (Director of Planning, NACEA), outstanding classroom teachers Duan Xia, You Yinyao, Yan Tieyu, and Li Zhaohong sincerely shared the challenges and breakthroughs in their teaching practices. The forum focused on practical paths and reflections regarding teachers' self-growth and sustainable professional development, providing valuable experience and emotional resonance for language educators.


III. Academic Core: 42 Parallel Sessions Showcasing the Depth and Breadth of Language Education
The Parallel Sessions of this conference consisted of 42 sessions, providing comprehensive coverage of the key dimensions of language education. They highlighted the distinct characteristics of being "technology-led, innovation-driven, teacher-oriented, and interdisciplinary." The sessions were systematically categorized into two core themes: "Chinese Language Education" and "English and Multilingual Education," which were further divided into 12 research directions. While outlining the research and practice trends in language education, these sessions also showcased numerous innovative achievements and high-quality teaching cases, presenting a vibrant landscape where academia and practice intertwine.
📌 Chinese Language Education Theme
This theme explored seven mainstream directions: Chinese characters and vocabulary, curriculum design, pedagogy, intercultural communication, educational technology, teacher development, and phonetics teaching. Renowned scholars including Zhong Yinghua, Ding Chongming, Ding Anqi, Wu Yinghui, Tan Dali, Liu Meiru, Duan Xia, Xu Peisong, Da Jun, Shi Zhongqi, Wang Jing, Cao Xianwen, Dong Yan, Wang Huazhen, and Wei Mingying contributed insightful presentations. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, they provided a multidimensional showcase of innovative paths and future possibilities within the field of Chinese language teaching.



📌 Theme on English and Multilingual Education Teaching
This theme focused on five cutting-edge areas: writing pedagogy, educational technology, teaching resources, teaching methodologies, and language policy. Distinguished guests from China and abroad, including Eric Grunwald, Fernando Rubio, Mary Jo Lubrano, Zhang Xuexin, Farzana Chowdhury, ABU BAKAR, Ding Lihong, Du Jia, Wang Juan, Liu Jie, Liu Yunyun, and Zhao Minhui, shared advanced practices and theoretical breakthroughs in multilingual education. Their contributions provided new perspectives and methodological support for promoting cross-linguistic and intercultural educational cooperation.




IV. Practical Workshops: Four Specialized Sessions with Hands-on Skills Enhancement
As the highly anticipated "highlight" of this conference, all four workshops were packed to capacity, characterized by an exceptionally vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere.
Workshop ①: Yale University - Innovative Applications of AI and Corpora in Language Assessment
- Professor Fernando Rubio demonstrated on-site how to efficiently analyze student language production using AI tools. The seamless operation and intuitive results left the attending teachers in awe, with many exclaiming, "This is truly an eye-opener!"


Workshop ②: MIT — Design and Implementation of Bilingual Immersion Teaching
Professor Eric Grunwald partnered with Lecturer Chen Tong to lead participants in group practice and instructional design using a "learning by doing" model. The session was highly interactive and engaging, earning unanimous praise for this approach.


Workshop ③: Research on Academic Paper Writing for International Journals
- Professor Jiang Nan focused on academic paper writing for international journals, analyzing issues of logical construction, discourse negotiation, and identity positioning in top-tier international publications.
Utilizing AI-assisted text analysis, Professor Jiang compared the rhetorical differences between Chinese and English academic writing and proposed several practical suggestions for writing and revision.
Through real-world case studies, the session analyzed methods for responding to reviewer comments and strategies for strengthening arguments.
Participants actively engaged in the hands-on sessions, resulting in an enthusiastic response.

Workshop ④: AP Chinese and Immersion Teaching — In-depth Practices and Innovative Paths
-This session was moderated by Lisa Huang Healy and co-presented by Tan Dali and Marty Chen. The workshop focused on instructional design for the Advanced Placement (AP) Chinese course and best practices in immersive Chinese teaching. It provided a systematic analysis of the core requirements and pedagogical strategies of the AP curriculum, while sharing a wealth of first-hand examples from immersion classrooms.
The content was comprehensive and highly practical, serving as a highly adaptable teaching model for International Chinese Language Education. The interactive session was lively, with attending teachers remarking: "The solid theories and vivid cases can be directly applied to our own classrooms. We have truly benefited a great deal!"



📜The participating teachers spoke highly of the workshop, commenting: “This workshop integrates academic depth, practical insights and extensive exchanges. It was rich in valuable content throughout, truly enlightening, and the outcomes exceeded all expectations!”
One teacher further remarked: “The theories were systematic, the cases vivid, and the interactions in-depth—all closely aligned with real teaching practice. It was indeed a rewarding and worthwhile experience!”
